Jesus, Forgiveness, Healing, Grace, Mercy, Redemption are all words that are associated with Christianity but the understanding of them is being lost today's world.
The Jesus we would like him to be
The most detailed accounts about the life of Jesus when he walked the earth some 2,000 years ago are found in the Bible. They are found at the beginning of the New Testament with three of then being written by Jesus' disciples, Matthew, Mark and John. The fourth was written by Luke, a doctor who examined all the evidence available at the time and set down, to quote his own words, an ‘Orderly Account’. Using these sources many other books have been written and many TV programs and films have been made about him. Some have been as independent as they could be in portraying the truth while other interpretations have sometimes been biased by the preconceived ideas of the writer or producer.
Faced with all these different opinions, that are all based on Second-Hand information, many people prefer pick and choose what they want to believe and thus form their own idea of who Jesus was and what he may have said and done.
This is what I did for many years. I read some parts of the Bible, listened to my teachers, but only chose to accept the parts that suited me. I ignored those 'hard to accept things’ that I came across Although I didn't realise it at the time I was a ‘Second-Hand Christian' (Click if a further explanation if required), in other words as well as relying on second-hand information I was only a Christian on 'my terms' rather than those called for by Jesus. Looking back, again not realising it at the time, I actually thought that I was doing God a favour by going the Church each Sunday (Well, I could have been reading the Sunday Newspapers couldn’t I !)
